Since 1969

The gallery of Ray Hughes began in Brisbane in 1969 as Gallery 1Eleven in Musgrave Road. In 1972 it moved premises to trade as Ray Hughes Gallery on Enoggera Terrace. In February 1985 a second gallery was opened in Sydney in the Jersey Road space of the late Rudy Komon, before moving to Surry Hills in 1988 where it remains. In July 2012, the gallery made its most recent name-change to The Hughes Gallery, commemorating the passing of the gallery's management from Ray to Evan Hughes.

A Family Business

Ray Hughes began life working in the corner store of Victor and Jean Hughes in Kedron, Queensland. Evan Hughes is also the son of a shopkeeper. Having read Art History at Cambridge University (UK) and then having worked with the legendary Mayor Gallery in London, Evan returned to Sydney in 2008. After a brief tenure overseeing an eponymous space above the family shop, Evan moved downstairs after a brief hiatus and by 2012 the son and father began running the shop together.

Australian Passion

Many of Australia's leading painters and sculptors at one point or another have had an exhibition with Ray Hughes. It is a hallmark of the gallery that artists are brought into the stable and injected with Ray's passionate embrace of imagery and creative expression. Our spaces are generous and exciting: some walls four metres high x twelve metres long, there is no shortage of challenge for emerging and established artists alike.

Premier in International

Whether West Africa, America, New Guinea, Europe or most recently China, Ray Hughes, and now son Evan, have been concerned with seeking out artists and projects that defy fashion and trends. You won't find much 'Biennale Art' on our walls today, though we have lent to various shows. You might have found an Anish Kapoor or Jean Dubuffet exhibition in Brisbane in the 1980s or a show of leading Chinese Contemporary artists on our Sydney walls in the early 2000s, but it is really the luck of what is hanging when you drop in.
