Driveway and Road Base Prep
Driveway and Road Base Prep in Waco
A gravel drive or private road is only as good as the base under it, and Thehughesgallery builds that base in layers. We strip and compact the subgrade, roll out geotextile separation fabric, then place and compact a crushed aggregate base so the surface carries traffic, sheds water, and does not rut. Done right, a driveway off a road like Cobbs Drive stays firm through Waco’s wet spells instead of turning to washboard and potholes.
Why the Base Layers Matter
- Fabric stops the mud pump. Geotextile separation fabric keeps the crushed stone from sinking into soft clay subgrade, which is the usual reason a gravel drive fails early.
- Angular stone locks together. Crushed aggregate base, a blend of stone and fines, knits under compaction into a stable, well-draining mat, far tougher than round pea gravel.
- Drainage is built in. We crown and slope the base so water runs off instead of pooling and softening the ground beneath.
Our Process
After an 811 locate we strip the drive path, compact the subgrade, and check it for soft spots. Fabric goes down over the prepared soil, then aggregate base is placed, graded to a crown, and compacted in lifts. The finished surface is ready for use as gravel or as a paving-ready subbase.
